CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Entschuldigung!”

Gillian Smith jerked and turned, startled at the sudden voice on the darkened street so late at night, then relaxed a little to see the man calling to her was on the other side of the street and a good ten feet down the road.

“Um, sorry. I don’t speak German,” she said, clutching her red scarf around her protectively.

The man waved his hand in the direction opposite from where Gillian was headed and spoke in broken English with a heavy accent.

“I … uh … find the Church of Saint Michael?”

“You mean you’re looking for the Church of Saint Michael?” Gillian asked.

The handsome stranger snapped his fingers and smiled. “Ja. Looking for.”

He held up his phone. “No data. I go to … how say?” he put his hands together in prayer and closed his eyes for a moment.

That put her even more at ease. A lost German looking to go to church while she stumbled home from a bender.

“Hold on,” she said, pulling the phone out of her purse. “I think I saw it on the map. It’s famous, right?”

“Yes. Famous,” the stranger said, crossing the street but not angling toward her. Nice of him to leave her some space. Most guys didn’t realize how scary it was for a woman to walk home alone at night.

The girl smiled. “Here it is.”

She turned the phone to face him. Only then did he close the gap between them.

Gillian only felt a touch of nervousness as the stranger approached her. He was lost and polite, which put her at ease, and he didn’t look like a creep. Plus they were standing less than half a block from a subway station.

Besides, she was on the University of Texas-Austin’s woman’s track and field team. If she kicked off these heels, she could outrun just about anybody. And this guy didn’t look like the running type. More team sports and a good gym routine.

Yeah, well built, she thought, warming up to him. Sure, I’ll give you directions.

As the stranger approached and Gillian got a better look at his face, she felt some disappointment. He looked older close up. Not old old, but too old for her.

“Danke schön. I not from here. I from Berlin,” he said.

“I’ve been there! Crazy nightlife. Here’s the church.” Gillian held up her phone.

He studied it for a moment. “Oh, danke!”

“No problem. Enjoy your midnight mass.”

The stranger nodded and took a couple of steps away before hesitating. “You want to come?”

Gillian’s heart suddenly started beating hard. She took a step back.

“Uh? Oh, no. Thank you.”

“The music is good.”

“No, um, I’m kinda tired. Nice meeting you.”

He shrugged.

“Auf Wiedersehen!” he said, and turned to walk away.

Gillian relaxed as she walked at a quick pace down the street, her high heels clacking on the pavement. At least this street wasn’t cobblestone. She hated those. Normally she didn’t wear heels at all, but this had been a formal party at the American Institute for the Erasmus students. The ambassador had even been there, for about half an hour before he left in his limo to something more important.
